Pet Titanium Implants - What’s Good for You is Good for Your Pet
At our veterinary surgery, we offer pet titanium implants for our patients. Titanium is an amazing metal routinely used in human medicine, and we want to offer our patients the same standard of care. They are more expensive than other types of implants, but we believe that they are worth the cost. Our veterinary surgery is committed to providing the best possible care for our patients, and we believe that titanium implants are the best way to do that.
We offer these implants for TPLO surgery for cruciate ligament injury in dogs and fracture repair (repair of a broken bone) in dogs and cats.
Why are Pet Titanium Implants the best option?
Titanium and Titanium alloys are among the most common components currently used in human orthopedic implants. Titanium superiority over regular, stainless-steel implants is due to its extreme strength, low weight, biocompatibility, and reliable mechanical performance.
Strength & Rigidity
Due to their strength, Titanium and Titanium alloy implants can resist the high forces occurring in active dogs without failure. Titanium is also very ductile so that the implant can be contoured to match the shape of the bone without breakage.
Weight
Titanium is remarkably light. It is as strong as steel but 45% more lightweight than steel. Pure Titanium has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of all known metals.
Biocompatibility
Titanium implants provide a reduced risk of tissue reaction. The more biocompatible an implant is, the better it will be tolerated by the body. That translates into a lower risk of infection and higher chances for good healing.
Ductility
Ductility is the ability of a material to be stretched/shaped without breakage. Titanium alloy implants are more malleable than stainless steel implants. As a result, they are easier to contour when bending the implant to match the bone’s shape.
MRI imaging
Titanium doesn’t affect the magnetic field of an MRI machine. So, in contrast to other materials such as stainless steel, the images are not distorted.
Cost of Titanium Implants
Titanium implants are more expensive than traditional, stainless-steel implants. That’s for a reason, as Titanium is considered the material of choice for implants. If pet parents prefer to use Titanium material, an additional implant fee is assessed to cover the cost difference. If regular stainless-steel implants are used, the cost of surgery does not change.
